tracfone unimax review
UNIMAX MaxPatriot with Tracfone
The UNIMAX MaxPatriot is an Android powered smartphone offered by Tracfone Wireless for use on their prepaid cell phone network. Tracfone offers a variety of phones and prepaid service options, which you can learn more about by readi ng our Beginners Guide to Tracfone.

Tracfone continues to release smartphones running the Android Operating System. These phones provide more features and functionality, with the ability to download and use applications on them.

Not a lot of information is available about the UNIMAX company, or sometimes UMX Mobile. They appear to be based in China, and are expanding into the Android mobile phone market quickly. Quality may not be quite on par with more established brands like Samsung, LG and Motorola.

The UNIMAX MaxPatriot comes with a 4" screen, Android 4.1, and a 5 MP camera. You also get Triple Minutes for Life, which all Android phones from Tracfone come with.

There are several other options for smartphones with Tracfone, including the Tracfone BYOP program, where you can bring certain phones to use with Tracfone. Also take a look at our Tracfone Android List for a complete of the smartphones available through Tracfone.

Som e of the current top phones from Tracfone are the LG Ultiamte 2, Moto E, and Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop. We will briefly compare these with the MaxPatriot a little further on.

Lets jump into the features and specs on the UNIMAX phone.

UNIMAX MaxPatriot Features
  • Android 4.1.2
  • 3G on Verizon Networks
  • WiFi
  • 5 MP Rear Camera
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • MP3 Player
  • Micro SD Card compatible up to 64GB
  • Triple Minutes for Life
  • Hearing Aid Compatible
  • Voicemail, SMS, MMS and Voice dialing

UNIMAX MaxPatriot Specs and Technical Details
  • Size: 4.80" x 2.46" x 0.41"
  • 4" Touchscreen
  • 1.2 Dual Core processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 1.5 GB Internal Memory, about 1 GB Usable
  • Weight: 4.6 ounces
  • Battery: Talk Time 7 Hours, Standby 8 Days
The features are fairly straight forward and similar to many of Tracfones other Androi d devices. The UNIMAX has WiFi, Triple Minutes for life, Micro SD card slot, GPS, and more.

The technical specs are where we get a little disappointed.

The MaxPatriot comes with a 4" touchscreen, which larger than some other Tracfone devices, but smaller than some as well. The Dual Core processor sounds good, but the internal memory is very disappointing, with only about 1 GB actually usable. Some apps can be loaded on an external SD card, but we would still like to see closer to 8 GB.

The LG Ultimate 2, for example, has more than 4 GB internal memory.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, lets go over some of our likes and dislikes about the UNIMAX, and then we will compare it with some other phones.

UNIMAX MaxPatriot Review - Likes and Dislikes

What we like about the MaxPatriot
< tr>
tracfone unimax maxpatriot
UNIMAX MaxPatriot with Maps
The UNIMAX 671c has many of the standard features of an Android smartphone with Tracfone service.

We like that it comes with the Android OS, which allows users access to over a million apps. These apps have huge potential, and give the phone many added benefits and features.

Take a look at our List of the Best Apps for Tracfone Android for some ideas.

While it is great that the MaxPatriot has Android, it isnt the latest version.

The screen size is another good point for the phone. At 4", it is mid-sized in the Tracfone lineup, which will be exactly what some users are l ooking for. Not everyone wants a large phone, although it is nice sometimes. The LG Optimus Fuel, for example, has a smaller, 3.5" screen while the Alcatel Onetouch Has a much larger screen, at 5".

We do think that the price, listed at $70, is more or less reasonable. And it is likely to be available for much less online, which makes this a very affordable phone.

Lets move on to our dislikes for this phone, of which there are a few.

What we Dislike about the UNIMAX MaxPatriot
We do have a handful of grips against the MaxPatriot, partially because it is an older phone, and there are much more advanced phones currently available with Tracfone.

The rear camera on the UNIMAX has 5 MP, which is good. But it doesnt have a front facing camera, which we find disappointing.

Internal Memory is probably one of our biggest disappointments with the UNIMAX MaxPatriot. At only 1.5 GB total internal space, and less than 1 GB actuall y usable, were not sure how useful this phone will actually be for most people. Unless you can move a large number of apps to the external SD card, you will be limited in your options.

Battery life seems poor on the UNIMAX, with 7 hours talk time listed, but often even less actually achieved. The Moto E, which has great battery performance, has more than double the talk time of the MaxPatriot, at 16.5 hours. If you can stay close to a charger, then it isnt a worry, but otherwise you may look elsewhere.

Finally, weve noticed a number of consumers echoing dissatisfaction with the overall quality and design of the phone. For some users, it works great, but others report various bugs, or a completely dead phone after just a few months.

The UNIMAX MaxPatriot has some decent features, but it doesnt seem to be a phone that will be too popular.

Using Android Phones with Tracfone

We want to highlight some important points about using an And roid phone with Tracfone, that you might not be aware of.

First, All Android phones with Tracfone currently use Verizon CDMA cell towers. Tracfone has some sort of contract with Verizon. This means that if Verizon service isnt available in your area, then you cant use a Tracfone smartphone there either.

All Tracfone Android devices come with Triple Minutes for Life, and minutes are split into three pools: calling, texting, and data.

For more differences and information, read our post on the 6 Major Differences Between Android and Non-Android phones.

And if you just want to learn about how minutes work, take a look at How Tracfone Minutes Work on Android Phones.

UNIMAX MaxPatriot Comparison to Other Androids

We will quickly compare the UNIMAX to some of the other popular smartphones available with Tracfone.

Basically, the Moto E, Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop, and LG Ultimate 2 are all better than the UNIMAX MaxPat riot. They all have larger screens, similar or better processors, more internal memory, similar or better cameras (and front facing), newer Android OS, longer battery life, and more, compared to the UNIMAX.

The only area where the MaxPatriot has an edge that we can find, is in its lower initial retail price.

But if you compare the UNIMAX to the LG Optimus Fuel, which can be found for $20, we would go with the Optimus Fuel for the lower cost, and newer Android OS.

If you want to know our top choice in Tracfone devices, take a look at TracfoneReviewers Best Tracfone Device.

Conclusion and Where to Find the UNIMAX MaxPatriot

As you can probably tell, we dont find the UNIMAX to be a very inspirational phone, and there are other options which will be a much better choice for most consumers. However, it is probably better than some of Tracfones first Android devices, like the ZTE Valet, and LG Optimus Dynamic.

The MaxPatriot i s available on the Tracfone website, and in some stores. We havent found it on other online retailers yet.

Please read the comments below before you consider this phone, as many users are reporting a lot of dissatisfaction with this device. We strongly recommend choosing another device, as there are plenty of other Android options from Tracfone at a similar price, with much better performance.

Take a look at the interactive tutorial to learn more about how this phone works.

We hope this information is accurate and useful. Leave a comment below with your thoughts or questions about this phone.

Windows 10 Creators Update will let you pause updates from being installed for up to 35 days

If you have Windows 10 on your computer, youre probably not loving what Microsoft has done with the way its OS handles updates. Namely, the fact that you cant choose when to have new updates installed - the process is as automatic as it gets. If you do wish you could control when updates are installed on your system, youll be happy to know that things could be changing in the future.

In fact, the Windows 10 Creators Update thats coming out for free in March will let you "pause updates" for up to 35 days at a time. This has been revealed by people who are currently running a leaked pre-release build of the Creators Update, and have spotted a new entry in the Advanced Options menu for Windows Update Settings.

As you can see from the screenshot above, theres a new Pause Updates switch in there, which if you turn on will make Windows not install any more updates for the next 35 days. Windows D efender definition updates arent covered, you will continue to get these. You can also see on what date the Pause setting expires and youll be hit with a barrage of updates.

Before you get the bubbly ready, keep in mind that this setting is part of an unreleased build of the Windows 10 Creators Update. That means it may change before the final release of that new OS, or it could even be removed entirely. There is however a chance that this means Microsoft is finally willing to give in to people hating the auto-update mechanism in Windows 10, even if just a little bit. One more thing to note - the leaked build is an Enterprise SKU, so its not clear whether this feature is also headed to the Windows 10 Home or Pro SKUs.

Get a free iPhone SE when you buy an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus on Sprint

Earlier today we told you about a great deal Best Buy currently has going on allowing you to essentially grab a Moto Z Droid on Verizon for free. But what if you dont like Verizon and would prefer to receive a free iPhone SE instead?

Well, Best Buy will deliver in this case too. You just need to be OK with having Sprint as your carrier. You must either add two lines, or add one and have another thats eligible for upgrade. The new lines must be on an Unlimited Freedom or Best Buy One plan, by the way. Then when you purchase or lease an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, you will get a free iPhone SE (16GB).

As with the other deal, the biggest caveat here is that the iPhone SE is only free after monthly bill credits. So you need to keep your lines active on Sprint for the whole two years while you pay off your installments for the iPhone 7 or 7 Plus. Otherwise, if you cancel wireless service, the balance becomes due for both that handset as well as the iPhone SE.

Xiaomi Redmi Pro is going to use Chinese made OLED panels

Xiaomi announced the Redmi Pro at a special event yesterday, and this is the Chinese companys most high-end Redmi-branded device ever. One thing that stands out in its spec list is the fact that it uses an OLED display. Thats not something youd expect to see in a phone that starts at $225 - because OLED panels are notoriously more expensive than LCDs.

Yet if you do get a phone with an OLED screen, then that panel is probably made by Samsung, since the Korean company apparently holds a market share of almost 95% in the space. Well, that expectation isnt being met in the Xiaomi Redmi Pro.

This device does not use Samsung-made OLEDs, instead opting to source them from two Chinese companies: EverDisplay and BOE. According to a new report out of the country, EverDisplay is the first supplier, and in case it cant handle Xiaomis orders, then BOE will be used.

We assume that the decision to go with Chinese suppliers for the OLED screen is one factor that has helped the Redmi Pros price remain pretty low, at least compared to similarly-specced competitors. The phones 5.5-inch 1080p display has a 60,000:1 contrast ratio and fully covers the NTSC color space.

How to use the Navigation App on Android

Smartphones really do seem to have a never ending list of uses and whether youve got a band new Samsung Galaxy S2 or a or a really old HTC Wildfire youll be able to use it to navigate your way around a town, cit y or even the country thanks to the Navigate app. Firstly you will need to find the app which resembles a blue triangle (see the screen shot to the right for an example of how it may look in an app draw).
After opening the app you will be asked to allow the use of GPS. The GPS will need to be turned on for the navigational purposes so turn it on when prompted.

After turning on GPS you will see a screen like the one to the left. What you need to do is click on either "Speak destination" or, as Ive done in the screen shot "Type destination". Once youve got your destination in the search bar press on the magnifying glass and your phone will figure out (via GPS) the best route for you to get from where you are to the destination)

When your phone has worked out your route you will be be shown a map like the one to the right for you to follow and thanks to the GPS being enabled you can actually track your progress (with you being the blue "dot" and the checkered flag being the destination). If you wish to zoom in for a better accuracy you can use the magnifying the magnifying glass in the bottom corner to zoom in however a more useful function is the directions screen. To access the directions screen you need to click on the little "list" icon.

The directions screen is wonderfully simple telling you the road you need to go on, the direction and the distance. Though this isnt the end of the wonders of the Navigation app. If you click on one of the directions
youll get a screen like the one on the right which shows your actual progress through that stage in a sort of "birds eye".

From the screen to the right you have 3 options. You can go back to the directions screen (press on the list icon), you can go to the next stage (press the arrow along the top) or you can go to street view (press the man at the right hand side).

Street view gives you the most detailed image of where you are looking at and is a great way to check that youre in the right place, going in the right direction. From the Street View you can again scroll through the stages of your route by pressing the arrows along the top of the screen.

Although the app m ay be trying to help drivers (and it does with a number of its more advanced functions) it can also help those lost in a new city who are looking for something like a landmark or a hotel (and using street view really makes that simple).

It needs to be noted that using navigation will use up data (whether its mobile data or Wi-Fi you will need to be connected to one or the other) and as its running GPS you may find that your battery will run down quicker than usual so dont use it for prolonged durations with out the ability to change the handset. Whilst you should be able to get a few hours out of a full charge, a car charger will be needed if you are trying to cover the country whilst using the app.

How to blacklist numbers on Android 2 3 5

Way back when the Samsung Galaxy S2 was released I did a guide on stopping number from calling your phone. Back then I was using an early release of Ginger (most probably 2.3.3 or even 2.3.2) and since then things have changed quite a lot with most people running 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 (if theyve not already gone to Ice Cream Sandwich). This has meant the original guide (which can be read here) is now quite dated and lacks a specific step that we will cover in this guide.

Instead of changing the original article, which does still help people running early versions of Gingerbread I thought it was worth starting from scratching and making this a cover all for every phone running Android 2.3.5 (and likely 2.3.6). The
actual method isnt much different to the original guide but their are some noticeable differences so lets start with setting screen (in the top left of this guide). From the settings menu you need to select "Call" and then "Call rejection" which is a screen like the screen shot on the left of this paragraph.

From the "Call rejection" screen you need to select "Auto reject mode" this will open

up a menu with 3 options: "Off", "All numbers" and "Only black list". From here you need to select "Only black list". After this the numbers on your black list wont be able to call your phone. What is actually quite annoying is that this step wasnt there in the original version of the software so you didnt need to do that and now you do.

After you select a choice from the "Auto reject mode" menu you will go back to the previous screen with the "Black list" option. Now you can either click on "Black list" and then click "Add" then add the number you wish to blacklist. Though it can be difficult to remember a whole mobile number so what I would advise is following the original black list guide (click here) and adding the numbers to the black list via your contacts screen.

Note-When you set an "Auto reject" mode you wil l see a new symbol along the notification bar of a red phone, an "A" and a "No" symbol, this is to say "Calls automatically rejected". The symbol can be clearly seen on the large screen shot alongside this paragraph with a white arrow pointing towards it.

This guide should work on any phone running Android version 2.3.5 and this includes the likes of a Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation XE and many many other.

Quick fixes and answers to Samsung Galaxy S6 texting issues other messaging problems

Texting problems are among the most common issues we received from Samsung Galaxy S6 (#Samsung #GalaxyS6) owners. So, this post is intended to answer some of the questions and solve some of the problems we received.
Galaxy-S6-text-message-attach-picture
Read on to learn how to address the problems I cited in this article. There’s a chance you may encounter one of them. Just click on the link to jump on a specific problem…
  • Can’t attach pictures to text message and vice versa
  • Group conversation option disappeared on T-Mobile Galaxy S6
  • Some group messages come in as empty bubbles
  • Having difficulties receiving text messages from HTC One
  • Can’t send a video through text message
  • Can’t send text message to multiple recipients
  • Send / Receive multimedia message through Wi-Fi
  • Can’t receive group text from a certain number
  • Verizon Galaxy S6 on MetroPCS Can’t download MMS
  • Assign names to group messages on Galaxy S6
  • Can’t attach pictures to text message and vice versa
Problem: When texting, I can’t combine both text and an attachment (usually a photo) in the same message.  When I first got my phone I could do this, but no longer. Now I only get the option to attach and send, so I’m forced to send two separate messages.
    1. Also, most of the time when sending a photo when texting, the message does not send immediately, I get a long download time with a “Cancel” button at the bottom of the text. Sometimes these messages fail to get delivered, or are not deliv ered until hours later. This problem started at the same time as the above problem.
Solution: It has something to do with VoLTE; disable it and you should be able to send MMS or picture messages like you did before. Just open the Phone app > tap on More > choose Settings > under Call settings section tap Voice over LTE > choose Do not use VoLTE.
Group conversation option disappeared on T-Mobile Galaxy S6
Problem: Hi, so I and my roommates both have the Galaxy S6. I am on T-Mobile and he is on Verizon. When I got my phone back in the summer I really enjoyed the feature on the messaging app that let’s you quickly switch between group messaging or sending a single message to many people individually, I used it quite often. About a month ago my option for that disappeared, but my room mates still has the function. I haven’t figured out how to send a non group text to multiple people easily since the change, and I couldn’t find anything online and was hoping you could explain more, thanks.
Answer: There must have been an update that took it away. There’s nothing we can do about it as it’s your provider’s decision to take away such feature. If you want to enjoy it, you can actually rollback to the previous firmware version but be warned that manual flashing may void the warranty of your device.
Some group messages come in as empty bubbles
ProblemWhen there is a group text message, some of the messages that come through are empty bubbles. I see the name of the person and the time they sent it, but there is no message. It seems to happen with other people who have android phones. I know one person it happened with also has a Samsung S6 but is on Verizon. Thanks for the help!
Answer: I’m not really sure how your phone is setup but it seems like it has something to do with mobile data. Group messages are considered MMS, thus you need to enable your mobile data to send and receive them. Try to verify if you can sent and receive picture messages just fine because if so, the problem might be on the sender’s end.
Having difficulties receiving text messages from HTC One
ProblemI have problems receiving text messages from one particular kind of phone: the HTC one. I have never had any other problems texting iPhone or Windows phones or anything in group messages. But this particular phone doesn’t like group messages on my phone. And I’ve asked other friends with the same phone, and they don’t have my problem with the group message. One on one we are fine, group messages no luck.
Answer: Verify with the HTC One’s owner if he/she can send MMS messages because it seems like the mobile data on the phone wasn’t enabled or he/she has issues with APN. Perhaps the reason why you can’t receive a message from that phone is because it can’t send MMS.
Can’ t send a video through text message
Problem: Every time I attempt to send a message with a bit of a video from my camera, it comes up as over the limit, then I can’t get it to go through email, only to Facebook where I have to the forward it to someone pager then delete it from Facebook, the recipient has to do the same to get the video, it can be 3 sec. Long…. No dice, what’s the issue?
Answer: When it comes to the amount of data transmitted over data network, there’s always a limit and there’s nothing we can do about it except shrink the size of the file you’re trying to send.
Can’t send text message to multiple recipients
ProblemGroup messaging vs. Multiple Recipients messaging. When I attempt to send a text message to multiple recipients, the phone seems to automatically send it out as a Group Message. I even switch the default setting to off in the settings menu. Obviously, this is any aggravating problem. Any solution to this would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: Turn off the ‘Use MMS for Group Messages’ in the Messages Settings. Once you disabled that, text messages won’t be converted to MMS when you include multiple recipient s but you should know that when recipients reply, they’ll be received as individual messages.
Send / Receive multimedia message through Wi-Fi
QuestionOn my Samsung Galaxy S6 I have to be using my mobile data to get and view the multi-media messages. Is there a way I can see the photo’s and group convos thru Wi-Fi? I would also like to get the message without having to press that download button. Every one knows it’s frustrating.
Answer: Multimedia messages are always transmitted through mobile data and there’s no workaround for that because that’s where service providers can profit from. You can, however, send text messages through Wi-Fi but not MMS.
Can’t receive group text from a certain number
ProblemI have 3 friends that I often group text with.  All three have iPhones. I can send texts to all 3 friends but only receive responses back from 2 of the friends.  We have looked at all the settings in the iPhone and my Galaxy S6 to find the issue but cannot find the problem.  Two of the three iPhone group members work fine; it’s only the third member of the group that can receive my texts but I do not receive their replies.  I can te xt back and forth fine with this third person individually; just not in a group. HELP!
Answer: The problem might be on their end and we can’t do something about that since we don’t know how his iPhone was set up. Just make sure his number isn’t blocked in your phone. As you can see, you can send group text and can receive the replies from two of the contacts. It’s clear enough your phone is working fine.
Verizon Galaxy S6 on MetroPCS Can’t download MMS
ProblemI recently switched my carrier from Verizon to MetroPCS. I have a Verizon Galaxy S6 that I am using on metropcs. Everything is working fine except for my group messages. When a text message comes in from a recipient in a group message it comes as an individual message that i need to download, when I click download the message doesn’t download. What can I do to fix this issue?
Answer: Just verify mobile data is enabled. If it’s turned on and you still have this issue, it’s clear the phone wasn’t set to use the APN from MetroPCS. Call your new provider and ask for the correct APN for your phone and ask the rep to guide you to set it up.
Assign names to group messages on Galaxy S6
QuestionI was wondering if you could name group chats, like how on iPhone you can choose a customized name for your and group. It gets really annoying when you have so many group message and don’t know which is which. I tried that group contact thing but it did not work and was not what I was looking for.
Answer: No you can’t assign names to group conversat ions in your Galaxy S6.
